Photo of another unusually warm and beautiful Saturday morning along coastal Maine. After nearly a week of summerlike temperatures, reality has set back in today as it is raining and temps are in the upper 30′s. This coming week will be cold, with a chance of snow Wednesday night and Thursday.

New Barn Cove - Hoyt Neck, Maine
This is the view that greeted us this morning on New Barn Cove in Biddeford Pool, Maine. The homes on Hoyt Neck can be seen in the background. It was a beautiful, unseasonably warm day to walk the beaches and capture photos of the beauty of Maine’s seacoast.

Sunrise at New Barn Cove, Maine - Click photo for full sized view
This lighthouse was commissioned in 1827 by John Quincy Adams and built the same year. Due to poor workmanship (salt water was used in the mortar mix), the lighthouse began to crumble and was replaced in 1835. The second contract for the construction stipulated that only fresh water be used.
By popular vote of Maine residents, the lighthouse was chosen to be featured on the Maine quarter, the 23rd in the 50 State Quarters Program issued by the U.S. Mint. The lighthouse is owned by the U.S. Coast Guard and is licensed to the American Lighthouse Foundation.
The following photo of the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse was taken during late Fall of 2011, awash in the glow of the rising sun. Conditions were very cold and windy at the time of the capture, but warmed nicely as the sun rose further into the sky.

I captured this photo of historic Fort Popham last fall as the sun was rising, casting it’s warm glow on the fort.
Fort Popham, located at the mouth of the Kennebec River in Phippsburg, Maine, is a semi-circular granite fort built in 1861 for use during the Civil War. The fort’s intent was to defend against the Confederacy’s ironclad warships. Construction halted in 1869, though the fort was briefly garrisoned during the Spanish-American War, and again in WWI.
